WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 5)-- Junior All-American midfielder Sheehan Stanwick scored four goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Kristen Baer added three goals and an assist to lead the #6 nationally-ranked Georgetown Hoyas to a 15-7 season-opening victory over the Commodores of Vanderbilt University in women's lacrosse action today on Kehoe Field. Sophomore attack Liz Drennan's three goals and senior midfielder Caroline Mans' two goals led Vanderbilt. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 1-0, while the Commodores fall to 0-1.
Drennan put the Commodores on the scoreboard first with a goal just 34 seconds into the game off a feed from senior attack Sue Napolitano; however, Georgetown answered with four-consecutive goals. GU junior midfielder Reagan Raneri began the run with an unassisted tally at the 29:02 mark. Sophomore attack Kate Ahearn found the back of the net at 24:45 off an assist from Sheehan Stanwick. Sheehan Stanwick then notched her first goal of the day with 23:34 on the clock. Junior midfielder Sarah Oglesby picked up a pass from Sheehan Stanwick with 15:47 left in the first period to give the Hoyas a 4-1 advantage. Vanderbilt senior defender Becky Kehl made the score 4-2 with 11:57 to go off an assist from sophomore attack Kinsey Osberg. Senior midfielder Kristen Baer registered her first goal of the game with 9:44 remaining in the first stanza, however, Napolitano would pull the Commodores within two (5-3) at 6:07. Baer responded with her second goal of the period just six seconds later to give Georgetown a 6-3 lead at the half.
Georgetown sophomore attack Erin Elbe struck first in the second half with an unassisted goal only 29 seconds into the period. Baer then posted her third goal of the game at the 27:18 mark to give the Hoyas an 8-3 lead. Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ryan was credited with the assist. Drennan made it 8-4 just 10 seconds later, but Georgetown reeled off three-straight goals to take an 11-4 advantage. Sheehan Stanwick started the run at 25:24, while junior midfielder Caitlin McLean and Oglesby contributed the other two goals at the 22:42 and 14:41 marks, respectively. The momentum then shifted as the Commodores responded with two goals of their own to make the score 11-6. Osberg set up Mans for a Vandy score with 13:01 left in the contest; and Drennan struck for her third goal of the day at 8:38. GU's Ryan stepped up with the first goal of her collegiate career with 8:00 on the clock, but Mans quickly fired a successful shot off for the Commodores just 47 seconds later. Georgetown closed out the game in strong fashion with three-consecutive goals. Sheehan Stanwick once again started the GU run with a goal off a Baer assist with 3:50 remaining. At the 1:49 mark, Sheehan's sister, Wick, a freshman attack, tallied her first goal as a Hoya. Sheehan wrapped up the 15-7 Hoya victory with an unassisted goal with 1:14 left in the period.
Sophomore goalie Bowen Holden posted five saves on the day for Georgetown to earn the win, while junior Emily Lough and senior Shana Crabtree split time in the cage for Vanderbilt for a combined 11 saves on the day. Lough turned away six Hoya shots while allowing 10 goals, while Crabtree rejected five shots and allowed five goals. The Hoyas outshot the Commodores 36-20 and held a 12-11 edge on draws.
The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, March 8, when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the Orangewomen of Syracuse University at 3:00 p.m.
