Georgetown Baseball Loses Two to St. John's

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 8, 2000) -- St. John's defeated Georgetown 15-4 in game one and 15-4 in game two in baseball doubleheader action on Saturday, April 8, at President's Field on the campus of New York Tech. The Red Storm posted 19 hits in the first contest and pounded out 11 in the second game to improve to 18-9 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST while the Hoyas' mark falls to 10-26 and 0-11 in Conference play. Game three of the series, which was scheduled for Sunday, was delayed one due to inclement weather and will be played on Monday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m.

In game one, the Red Storm took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but saw it trim to a 3-2 advantage by the middle of the third. Shortstop Matt Carullo (Fr., Oakton, Va./Paul VI) hit a sacrifice bunt in the second to score first baseman Eric Santana (Jr., Santurce, P.R./Edgewood). Left fielder Jason Boice (Fr., Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) singled to center field in the in third frame to score second baseman Jay Catalano (Jr., Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School). That's as close as the Hoyas would get as St. John's exploded for three runs in the bottom of the third, two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and five runs in sixth.

GU posted its final two runs in the top of the sixth as Santana singled in designated hitter Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) and right fielder Brian Cassese (Jr., Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) brought home Santana with a single up the middle for the final 15-4 score. Vankoski started on the mound for GU and allowed six earned runs off 12 hits in four innings of work.

Georgetown saw an early 3-3 tie evaporate into a 14-3 disadvantage as the Red Storm scored four runs in the second and seven in the fifth. The Hoyas had a 1-0 margin in the first when Jim Vankoski scored off an error. In the bottom of the inning, SJU's Eric Potts blasted a three-run homer to center field, but Jason Boice homered for Georgetown in top of the second and Matt Carullo scored on a passed ball to tie the game in the middle of the inning.

The Red Storm scored two runs off wild pitches and two more scores off RBI singles in the bottom half of the frame for a 7-3 margin. They rang up seven more runs in the fifth and another in the eighth before the Hoyas could get on the board again. GU got its fourth score when center fielder Marc Carlini (Jr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) hit a RBI single in the ninth to bring home second baseman Tony Lee (Fr., Bromall, Pa./Malvern Prep). Junior hurler Matt Arizin (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) was on the mound for GU. He pitched one inning allowing six runs off five hits.

After today's final game with St. John's, the Hoyas will travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to play Mt. St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m. on April 11, in a make-up from the March 21st game that was postponed.
