PHILADELPHIA (April 16) -- Georgetown fell to Villanova 16-4 on Sunday, April 16, in the final game of a three-game baseball series at Richie Ashburn Field. The Wildcats won game one and game two 10-5 and 6-2 on Saturday.
Villanova (19-17, 7-8 BIG EAST) broke open a 4-4 game with nine runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to claim a 16-4 victory over Georgetown (12-30, 1-14 BIG EAST). GU faced 14 batters in the eighth which saw the 'Cats clock three home runs including a grand slam.
VU took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings. GU tied the score in the top of the third when catcher Pat Wade (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown) hit a two RBI double which scored center fielder Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) and Matt Carullo (Fr., Oakton, Va./Paul VI). 'Nova went up again in the bottom of the inning off designated hitter Nick Piantek's sacrifice fly RBI and second baseman Matt Longo's RBI single. The Hoyas' designated hitter Jason Boice (Fr., Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) reached on an error to score Carullo in the seventh. Wade followed that with a sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the game to tie the game at 4-4.
GU pitching unraveled in the eighth as the Wildcats posted nine runs off eight hits. Longo homered, pinch hitter Mike Houser hit a grand slam, Ryan Crammer and Brandon Mannix each hit RBI singles, and catcher Dan Glover registered a two RBI double to give Villanova a 13-4 advantage. Crammer rocked a three RBI homer in the eighth for the final 16-4 win.
Junior Randy Erwin (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) started for Georgetown going 6-1/3 innings allowing eight runs off thirteen hits. Tom Kandybowicz earned the win for VU allowing three runs off nine hits in 8-1/3 innings.
Georgetown is home on Tuesday, April 18, against local rival George Washington. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. The two teams met previously on March 15, at Georgetown with the Colonials taking home a 14-0 win.
