No. 29 Notre Dame Sweeps Doubleheader Over Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 22) - Georgetown lost to 29th-ranked Notre Dame 5-1 and 12-1 in BIG EAST doubleheader baseball action on Saturday, April 22, at the GU Baseball Stadium. The Hoyas' overall record falls to 12-34 and 1-18 in the Conference while the Fighting Irish move to 32-9 and 12-4 in BIG EAST play.

ND took a one run lead in game one after center fielder Steve Stanley knocked in a score with a double in the third inning. In the fifth, first baseman Jeff Felker and left fielder Matt Strickroth each singled. But with two outs, designated hitter Ken Meyer homered to left field to give the Fighting Irish three runs in the innings and a 4-0 advantage. Notre Dame picked up another run in the seventh to increase the margin to 5-0. Georgetown pushed its only score on the board in the bottom in the ninth when pinch hitter Mike Green (So., McLean, Va./Landon School) grounded out a RBI which scored right fielder Brian Cassese (Jr., Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester).

Georgetown hurler Randy Erwin (Jr., Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) pitched seven innings allowing five runs off six hits. The Irish's Scott Cavey nabbed the win going six frames with four hits and no runs.

Game two witnessed Notre Dame rock five home runs including back-to-back jacks in the fourth to earn a 12-1 win over the Hoyas. GU went up early in the first when senior left fielder Josh Corman (Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) reached on base due to an error. Corman stole second and advanced to third with help from Mike Green. Center fielder Jim Vankoski (Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) registered a RBI with a ground out to the shortstop to score Corman.

The 1-0 lead was short-lived as Irish second baseman Kris Billmaier belted a three-run shot to left field in the top of the second, which was followed by back-to-back home runs from third baseman Alex Bushey and right fielder Brian Stavisky in the fourth. Stanley's double to left gave ND four runs in the fourth and a 7-1 advantage. Billmaier homered again in the fifth frame to score two more. Stavisky also homered again but this time in the ninth to bring home three more giving Notre Dame the 12-1 win.

The Irish poured on 12 runs off 12 hits from four different Hoya pitchers. Starter Matt Arizin (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) was credited with the loss going three innings allowing six runs off six hits. Notre Dame used five pitchers who combined for seven hits and no earned runs. Drew Duff was credited with the win for the Irish. Billmaier was 2-4 with five RBI and three runs scored, while Stavisky navigated a 3-5 day with four RBI and also three scores. Bushey went 3-for-4 with four runs and a RBI. Corman led GU going 2-4 with a run.

The Hoyas step out of the conference on Tuesday, April 25, with a game against local rival Catholic at 3:30 p.m.
