Men's Lacrosse Defeats Cornell, 14-12

GENEVA, N.Y. (May 13, 2000)-Andy Flick (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) scored five goals, including three in the final 6:02 of play as Georgetown rallied to defeat Cornell, 14-12, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at Boswell Field on the campus of Hobart College. With the victory, the Hoyas (12-2) will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals where they will meet top-ranked Syracuse on Saturday afternoon. The game will be played at 1 p.m. on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.

Cornell took a 12-9 lead with 11:31 left to play in the game when Sean Steinwald netted his fourth goal of the game. Georgetown would answer with the final five goals. Junior Scott Doyle (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) started the rally with an extra-man goal with 9:03 remaining. It was the fourth goal of the game for Doyle. GU cut the lead to 12-11 when Andy Flick scored an extra-man goal on a feed from Steve Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington).

The Hoyas tied the game with 2:47 to play when Scott Urick (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) put home an outstanding pass from freshman Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson). GU took the lead for good just 28 seconds later when Flick scored his 36th goal of the season. Dusseau was credited with his second assist. Flick then sealed the game when he broke a double team and put in his fifth goal of the day into the open net.

The Hoyas fell behind early in the game as Cornell jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Steinwald had three of the five goals for the Big Red (10-4). Georgetown scored the final four goals of the half to take a 6-5 lead at the break. Doyle, Kyle Sweeney (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Peter Velepec (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) and Hammer all had goals during that stretch.

Cornell stayed in the game due in part to the play of goalie Justin Cynar. The sophomore recorded 19 saves in the game, including many at point-blank range. GU fired 54 shots at Cynar, while the Big Red could muster just 24. Cornell controlled the face-off area as they won 22 of the 29 draws. Both teams had 35 ground balls.
