Women's Lacrosse Falls To Maryland, 7-6, In Overtime

COLLEGE PARK, MD. (May 14) -- Freshman Sonia Judd took a pass from junior Jen Adams and netted the game-winning goal with 1:46 remaining in overtime to help the top-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team advance to the NCAA Final Four for its 11th consecutive trip with a 7-6 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas at Ludwig Field on May 14. Maryland is now 19-1, while the Hoyas end their season with a 12-5 record.

Adams opened the game with an unassisted goal at the 29:20 mark of the first half with Terp senior Kristin Sommar (North Wales, Pa.) extending the Maryland lead to 2-0 only 38 seconds later. The rest of the afternoon became a back-and-forth game, with four ties and the Hoyas leading 4-3 at the half. With 10:45 remaining in the second half, Adams' third goal of the game put the Terps ahead 6-5, breaking the school's single-season points record of 117, which she also had previously held. She bumped her season total to 119 points by the end of the day. Adams also tied the other two major single-season categories in the NCAA quarterfinal, equaling Kelly Amonte's 1996 mark of 48 assists and her own goal mark of 71, which she set last season in Maryalnd's title run.

For Georgetown, sophomore Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.J.) notched the final four goals of the afternoon for the Hoyas, including one with 5:21 left in the game to force overtime, but it wouldn't be enough to upset the Terps on their home field. Aside from the Adams-to-Judd connection to win the game, Sommar shined on defense for the Terps in the extra period. The tri-captain forced two key Georgetown turnovers in the second half of the overtime period, and sparked the transition that led to the game winner. In goal, Maryland's Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.) recorded six saves in the win. Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass.) played a strong game for the Hoyas in goal, coming up with 12 saves on the day.
