BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Right fielder Marc Carlini (Sr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) and third baseman Ron Cano (Fr., El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) combined for 11 hits and four runs batted in as Georgetown was swept in a BIG EAST Conference baseball three-game series by Virginia Tech at English Field on Saturday and Sunday. The Hoyas lost the first game 14-5 and the nightcap by a score of 10-6 on Saturday. Georgetown fell 7-3 in the finale of the three-game set on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas now stand at 14-36 on the season and 6-18 in BIG EAST play.
GAME 1 - First baseman Eric Santana (Sr., Santurce, P.R./Edgewood) provided the Hoyas with a three-hit performance in the 14-5 losing effort. He led off the second inning with a single up the middle and scored on shortstop Jay Catalano's (Sr., Hunting Valley, Ohio/Univ. School) single to center. The Hoyas added another run in the inning tying the game at 2-2 when catcher Michael Lombardi (Fr., Brookhaven, N.Y./St. Anthony's) crossed the plate on Carlini's single to right center. Santana's double to center field in the third scored Jim Vankoski (Sr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) again tying the game, this time at three apiece.
Tech's John West snapped the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the third with two-run homer to left center. He then helped the Hokies break the contest open by driving a three-run homer during a five-run Tech outburst in the fifth. West also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and finished the game 2-for-3 with six runs batted in.
GU scored twice in the fifth before Tech's five-run outbreak in the latter half of the inning. With Santana on second and two outs, third baseman Cano hit his team-leading third homerun of the season.
Georgetown starter Matt Arizin (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) pitched into the third inning and suffered the loss, his sixth against three wins. Tech starting pitcher Jason Bush picked up the victory with five innings of work.
GAME 2 - The Hoyas three hits from Carlini and two RBI's from second baseman Mike Green (Jr., McLean, Va./Landon School) in the second game, but couldn't hold a 4-3 third inning lead falling 10-6 in the nightcap of the BIG EAST double header.
GU got a run in the opening inning when Green scored on Robert O'Hare's (So., San Jose, Calif./Mission College) single to right field. They added three more runs on two hits and two Hokie errors in the second taking a 4-3 advantage. Tech tied it at four in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.
The Hoyas managed to rally for two more runs in the ninth. Lombardi doubled to center field to lead off the inning. Catalano and Carlini followed with singles trimming the Hoyas deficit to 10-5. Catalano scored the Georgetown's final run of the game on Green's sacrifice fly to center.
Carlini finished the second game 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. O'Hare and Cano each finished the day with two hits.
Hoyas starter Kevin Field (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) took the loss for the Hoyas. The 6-5 freshman tossed seven innings and struck out four. Tech got a complete-game pitching performance from lefty Joe Saunders who improved to 7-2 on the season and 6-0 in the BIG EAST.
GAME 3 - Starting pitcher Eric Sutton (Jr., Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) first inning control troubles (3 BB, 1 WP) allowed the Hokies to score twice on just one hit. Sutton allowed another in the second but settled down limiting the Hokies to just four hits over the next four innings keeping the Hoyas within a run of Tech entering the seventh.
Georgetown had added two runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. Cano led the inning off with a single up the middle. Back-to-back RBI-doubles by Lombardi and Catalano kept the Hoyas in contention. The Hoyas added their third run of the day on a single combined with a pair of Tech errors to bring home Carlini.
The Hokies scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth to give Tech a 7-3 advantage and the three-game sweep of the Hoyas.
Georgetown (14-36, 6-17) got two hits each from second baseman Mike Green, center fielder Jim Vankoski and right fielder Marc Carlini. Starting pitcher Eric Sutton (2-7) took the loss for the Hoyas. Bauder led Tech with three hits in five at bats, while West contributed two hits in three trips to the plate.
