Georgetown scored eight runs in the first inning, but it was not enough to hold off Delaware State as the Hoyas fell by a margin of 22-12 on Wednesday, February 21 in Dover, Delaware. Senior Jim Vankoski (Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) led Georgetown's offense by going 2-3 with two runs and three RBIs. He also closed the game by pitching 1 and 2/3 innings.
Seven Hoyas reached home in the game's opening inning, which was capped off by Vankoski's double to left center that drove home sophomore Tony Lee (Bromall, Pa./Malvern Prep) and senior Marc Carlini (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal). The Hoyas also capitalized on four Delaware State errors to score seven of their runs.
The Hornets inched closer after scoring two runs in the second inning and five runs in the third inning. However, Georgetown strengthened its lead in the following inning. Sophomore Robert O'Hare (San Jose, Calif./Mission College) reached base on a double to right field and senior Eric Santana (Santurce, P.R.-Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) then drove in the runner with his double to center. Delaware State tied the game with a two-run outing in the fourth inning. Georgetown regained its lead in the fifth when Carlini scored off of Vankoski's sacrifice fly to right field.
Georgetown scored two more runs in the game, but the Hornets' offense proved to be too much in the end. In the seventh inning, Carlini walked, stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. The senior then scored on an error by Delaware State's catcher. In the eighth inning, freshman Carlos Gazitua (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) scored after reaching third base on Santana's single to left field. He was driven home by freshman Michael Lombardi's (Brookhaven, N.Y./St. Anthony's) sacrifice fly to right field. Senior Matt Arizin (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) picked up the loss while Delaware State's Dave Gordon took home the win.
The Hoyas are now 0-5. They will face Bucknell in a double header this Saturday, February 24, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland.
