Duke Edges Georgetown, 8-7

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Freshman midfielder Anouk Peters (Ipswich, Mass./Milbrook School) tallied two goals, and five other Hoyas found the back of the net, but it was not enough as #2 Georgetown fell 8-7 to the #5 Duke University Blue Devils in women's lacrosse action on Saturday, March 24, on Kehoe Field. Sophomore attacker Lauren Gallagher led Duke with three goals and two assists. Georgetown falls to 5-1 overall on the season while Duke improves to 4-1.

Duke took a 1-0 advantage on midfielder Kate Souliers' shot 6:30 into the game. GU responded with back-to-back goals by seniors Sarah Oglesby (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) and Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) to take a one-goal lead (2-1) with 20:41 remaining in the first half. Soulier added another goal at 18:51 to tie the game at 2-2. Senior Courtney Rodgers regained the lead for Duke at the 14:02 mark. With just one minute remaining in the half, Peters slipped a shot past the Blue Devils' goalie Kristen Foster to record her first goal of the game and tie the contest at 3-3 going into halftime.

The Blue Devils' Gallagher and Cheryl Lynn Horton struck for two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to put Duke up 5-3. GU trimmed the lead to one when Sheehan Stanwick found junior Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in front of the net to set up the score with 13:42 on the clock. One minute and nine seconds later the Hoyas tied the game at 5-5 as sophomore Wick Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) recorded her first goal of the game. Duke reclaimed the lead at 10:57 on a shot by Gallagher but held it just 48 seconds as the Hoyas' Peters posted her second goal of the day with 10:09 remaining. The Blue Devils scored two more times, once at 8:45 by Gallagher and again by Kelly Dirks with 4:14 remaining in the contest. Georgetown failed to capitalize on the draws, and Duke held on to the ball to run down the clock. The Hoyas had one last offensive burst when Melissa Ellers (Fr., Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) scored with 27 remaining, however Duke won the draw to end Georgetown's 13-game home winning streak.

Senior goalie Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) posted 13 saves on the day for Georgetown, while netminder Kristen Foster had 12 saves for Duke. The teams were equal on draws at 8-8; however, Georgetown held a 22-18 advantage on shots.

The Hoyas' next game is on Wednesday, March 28, when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to play Boston College in Alumni Stadium at 3:00 p.m.
