GU Wins Second Straight, Down Howard 4-2

Georgetown baseball picked up their second consecutive victory Thursday, March 8, defeating Howard 4-2 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. Freshman pitcher Kevin Field (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) produced the Hoyas best pitching performance of the season pitching a complete game and striking out seven while allowing five hits and just one walk.

The Hoyas scored three in the second inning without a hit taking advantage of two errors and a walk by the Bison. Freshman catcher Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led off the inning reaching first on a fielding error by the third baseman. Senior Brian Cassese (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) followed with a walk advancing Lombardi to second. Sophomore Matt Carullo (Oakton, Va./Paul VI), placing a sacrifice bunt down the third base line, reached first as the pitcher overthrew the first baseman. The error proved costly to the Bison as both Lomardi and Cassese scored while Carullo advanced to third. Freshman Bret McLeod (St. Albert, Alberta/Paul Kane) increased the Hoya lead to 3-0 in the next at bat on a sacrifice fly to center scoring Carullo.

Georgetown added another run in the bottom of the fourth again benefiting from a Bison fielding error. With one out in the inning, Junior Mike Green (McLean, Va./Landon School) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Following a hit batsman and a walk advancing Green to third, Cassesse flied out to right field allowing Green to tag and score.

The 4-0 deficit for the Bison was too much as the Hoyas defense held them to one run in the fourth and one in the fifth. Field never faced more than five batters in one inning and posted five "three up, three down" innings. In five appearances this year he is 1-0 with a 6.19 ERA and leads the team with 11 strikeouts.

The Hoyas are now 2-7. Game 2 of their 16-game home stretch is against Coppin St. on Friday, March 9, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland. Over the weekend (March 10-11) Georgetown hosts Central Connecticut State University for three games; a double header on Saturday beginning at 12:00 and another game on Sunday at 1:00.
