Georgetown's baseball team, despite collecting six hits and five walks, left nine runners on base and fell for the fourth time in as many days. The 12-2 loss to George Washington at Barcroft Park Tuesday kept the Hoyas from reaching double-digit wins on the season as they dropped to 9-26 overall.
The Hoyas took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With two outs and runners at first and second, shortstop Brian Cassese (Sr., Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) singled to left picking up his fifth RBI of the season as designated hitter Robert O'Hare (So., San Jose, Calif./Mission College) scored. GW tied the score with a run in the bottom half of the inning and added three more runs in the third on a two-out Mike Bassett homerun to right field.
The score remained 4-1 until the sixth when GW took advantage of a Hoya error scoring eight runs in the inning, four of which were unearned. The Colonials also hit three homeruns in the inning. Jake Wald and Dan Rouhier each went deep while Bassett hit his second of the day.
GU added another run in the top of the seventh when Cassese scored on leftfielder Jason Boice's (So., Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) two-out double. The Hoyas, unable to inch closer, sustained the 12-2 loss. Starting pitcher Jim Vankoski (Sr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) went five innings allowing nine runs (7 ER) and struck out four while taking the decision and falling to 2-3 on the season.
Georgetown travels to Notre Dame on Thursday, April 12 to battle the Fighting Irish in a BIG EAST double-header in Frank E. Eck Stadium at 12:00 p.m.
