#5 Womens' Lax Falls to #1 Maryland, 13-9

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior All-American attacker Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored four goals and two assists for #5 Georgetown University, but it was not enough as #1 Maryland handed the Hoyas a 13-9 loss in women's lacrosse action today on Kehoe Field. Senior All-American midfielder Jen Adams led Maryland with six goals and four assists on the day. Georgetown falls to 8-2 overall with the loss, while Maryland remains undefeated at 11-0.

Sheehan Stanwick put the Hoyas on the scoreboard first when she found the back of the net at 24:03. Adams scored the Terps' first goal off a free position shot 29 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1. Back-to-back goals by Maryland junior attack Courtney Hobbs and senior attack Allison Comito give the Terrapins a two point lead (3-1) with 15:05 left in the first period. Adams was credited with the assist on Comito's goal. Sheehan Stanwick capitalized on a free position shot at the 14:09 mark to pull within one, and junior All-American attack Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tied the score one minute and 21 seconds later at 3-3. It would be the Hoyas' last score in the first period. Comito fed Adams for the score at 7:57 to go up 4-3. Adams then returned the favor when she assisted on Comito's goal with just 11.3 second left on the clock before the half. Maryland took a 5-3 lead into the halftime.

Senior midfielder Quinn Carney opened the second period scoring after picking up a pass from Comito to make the score 6-3 with 27:09 on the clock. Adams made it 7-3 with an unassisted goal at 23:55. Sophomore Wick Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made the most of a free position shot at 22:41 to give the Hoyas' their first goal of the second half, but Hobbs responded 41 seconds later off an assist by Adams to give Maryland a 8-4 lead, and Adams made it 9-4 at 20:43 with an unassisted goal. The Stanwick sisters combined for the next GU goal at 19:53, with Wick netting the goal and Sheehan picking up the assist. Georgetown then reeled off two straight goals, the first at 19:01 by Elbe and the second at 15:44 by Sheehan Stanwick on a shovel shot. Adams bumped Maryland's lead up to 10-7 at 8:32, but Elbe answered to make the score 10-8. The Terrapins struck for two straight goals to push the UM lead to four (12-8). Sheehan Stanwick tallied the Hoyas' last goal of the day with 1:25 to go in the game. It was Adams who closed out the contest with an unassisted goal with just 27.8 seconds remaining make the final score 13-9 in favor of the Terps.

Despite playing with an injury, senior All-American goalie Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) turned away five Terrapin shots on the afternoon while allowing 12 goals. Junior goalkeeper Chandler Vicchio (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) came in to relieve Holden at the 4:07 mark of the second period and posted two saves while allowing one goal. Sophomore netminder Alexis Venechanos rejected seven GU shots in the game while giving up nine goals. Maryland outshot the Georgetown 25-24 and the Hoyas picked up only 17 ground balls to the Terrapins' 32. The Terps held a 13-11 edge in draw controls, while the Hoyas had a slight 4-3 advantage in free position shots.

The Hoyas return to action on Friday, April 20, when the Lady Lions of Penn State pay a visit to Kehoe Field for a 3:00 p.m. game.
