Sheehan and Wick Stanwick combine for 12 goals and four assists
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- For the second time this season, the sister duo of Sheehan and Wick Stanwick (Sr., Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) led #5 Georgetown University to victory. On this occasion, the Stanwick sisters combined for 12 goals and four assists to defeat #6 North Carolina 15-9 in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday, April 7, at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus. Georgetown has now defeated the Tar Heels in the last three meetings between the two teams. The Hoyas improved to 8-1 on the season while the Tar Heels fell to 7-4.
Sheehan Stanwick tallied a season-high seven goals to go with three assists, while Wick Stanwick notched five goals and one assist in the winning effort.
The teams traded goals and leads in the first half before a goal by Wick Stanwick with 2:32 left in the first half sparked a nine-goal run by Georgetown. The Tar Heels went 23:55 without scoring a goal as Georgetown went from a 7-6 deficit to a 15-7 lead. Lindsay Stone scored her fourth goal of the game to finally break the scoring drought for UNC with 6:14 to play in the second half. It was a matter of too little too late as it was UNC's first goal since Erin McInnes had scored to give the Tar Heels a 7-6 lead with 4:09 to play in the first half.
Senior All-American goalkeeper Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury)turned away 17 Tar Heel shots on the day, while allowing nine goals. Melissa Coyne and Katelyn Hoffman combined to reject nine GU shots while allowing 15 goals. North Carolina outshot Georgetown 35-24, and held a 16-14 edge in caused turnovers, while GU held a 32-30 advantage in groundballs . The Hoyas won one more draw than the Tar Heels (13-12).
The Hoyas return to action on Thursday, April 12, when they host the #1 ranked Terrapins of the University of Maryland at Kehoe Field at 4:00 p.m.
