Moraga, CA - Georgetown couldn?t avoid a three-game series sweep by Mount Saint Mary?s (CA) losing 10-1 in the finale on Sunday at Louis Gusto Field. The loss drops the Hoyas to 5-14 while the Gaels improved to 7-8.
A dominant pitching performance by Saint Mary?s Eric Bowden (2-0) limited GU to one run on four hits. The Gaels collected 16 hits on the day including a homerun in the first inning by Jason Waugh grabbing an early 1-0 lead. Georgetown tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. With two outs and James Supple (Fr., Summit, N.J./St. Peter?s Prep) on first, third baseman Tony Lee (Jr., Bromall, PA/Malvern Prep) doubled to left field driving in the run and picking up his second RBI of the season. Saint Mary?s bounced back in the bottom of the inning with four runs on six hits taking a 5-1 lead that they would not relinquish. The Gaels added one more run in the fifth off of Hoyas starting pitcher Tom O?Connor (So., North Wales, PA/La Salle) who walked one and stuck out two in defeat. Saint Mary?s continued to extend their lead with three runs in the seventh and another one in the eighth completing the three-game sweep with the 10-1 victory.
Ron Cano (So., El Segundo, CA/El Segundo), Bill Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./Alta Loma), Supple, and Lee (2B) collected the four hits for the Hoyas. O?Connor dropped to 0-1 on the season with a 3.75 ERA.
Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday to battle the Maryland Terrapins (13-2) in College Park, MD. Last year GU won the lone meeting 8-7 with all eight runs coming in the top of the ninth. Tuesday?s matchup is set for 3:00 pm EST.
