SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA ? Relief pitcher Patrick Salvitti (Jr, North Wales, Pa./La Salle) walked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Georgetown fell to Cal Poly 4-3 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday night in Baggett Stadium. With the loss, Georgetown drops to 4-11. Cal Poly improves to 10-15-1.
Each team collected eight hits. Georgetown was led offensively by left fielder Ron Cano (So. El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) and second baseman Matt Carullo (Jr., Oakton, VA./Paul VI), each with a pair of hits. One of Cano's hits was a triple and first baseman Bret McLeod (So., St. Albert, Alberta/Paul Kane) added a double for the Hoyas.
Georgetown scored a run in the first inning on a groundout by center fielder Carlos Gazitua (So., Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) and added two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by catcher Michael Lombardi (So., Brookhaven, N.Y./St. Anthony?s) and a sacrifice fly by right fielder Bill Quinn (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif./Alta Loma).
Cal Poly's first run in the second inning came on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Aaron Escobedo. Cal Poly's hits were by eight different players and left fielder Bill Saul had the lone extra-base hit for the Mustangs -- a two-run double to right-center field in the fifth inning that tied the game at 3-3.
The Mustangs opened the eighth inning with back-to-back singles and then a hit batsmen off of Salvitti (0-1) to load the bases. A bases-loaded walk snapped the 3-3 tie and gave Cal Poly the lead for the first time in the game. The Hoyas were retired in order in the ninth as Kevin Correia (4-2) picked up the win for Cal Poly.
Georgetown will play at Bethany College on Friday followed by a three-game weekend series at Saint Mary?s. The Mustangs host Portland for a three-game weekend series.
