Storrs, CT ? The Georgetown University baseball team combined for eight runs on eighteen hits but were unable to slow the Huskies offense losing both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field 15-1 and 15-7. Georgetown dropped to 9-41-0 overall and 2-20-0 in the conference. UCONN improved to 23-17-0 overall and 11-7-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas and Huskies remained scoreless in game one until an RBI-double by third baseman Bill Quinn in the third gave GU the 1-0 advantage. Starting pitcher Eddie Pena (0-7) held the Huskies scoreless for another inning but UCONN broke through in the fourth claiming 11 runs on 10 hits. Georgetown?s pitching staff never recovered allowing three more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth leading to the 15-1 loss. Catcher James Supple was the lone run of the game for the Hoyas.
GU?s offense came to life in game two providing seven runs on 14 hits but the Hoyas performance on the mound from game one continued into the second half of the doubleheader as Georgetown lost 15-7. The Hoyas rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit grabbing two runs on three hits in the third to tie the game. Back-to-back doubles by Ron Cano and Mike Green followed by an RBI single by Matt Carullo provided the two runs and the tie game. UCONN responded by adding a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage.
Georgetown again rallied to tie the game, this time with three runs in the fifth on four hits. With two outs and Carullo on first the Hoyas patience at the plate paid off. Centerfielder Carlos Gazitua walked moving Carullo into scoring position. Back-to-back singles by Quinn and right fielder Robert O?Hare scored Gazitua and Carullo. Supple then doubled down the right field line allowing Quinn to score and tying the game at five apiece. The Hoyas then self-destructed on the mound allowing five runs in the bottom of the fifth on just two hits. Starting pitcher Eric Sutton (4-8) walked the first batter and gave up a single to the next batter before being replaced by Patrick Salvitti. Salvitti was unable to get an out as he hit the next three batters allowing two of the five runs to score and then tossed a wild pitch for the third run of the inning before being pulled in favor of Michael Halloran. A sacrifice fly and another wild pitch gave the Huskies a 10-5 lead.
Georgetown managed two more runs in the seventh on an RBI-triple down the right field line by O?Hare and a sacrifice fly by Supple but the Hoyas never got any closer as the Huskies added four in the seventh and another in the eighth finishing the sweep with a 15-7 victory. The two teams are scheduled to finish the three-game series tomorrow at noon.
