Storrs, CT - Despite collecting eight hits the Georgetown University baseball team managed just one run in a losing effort to BIG EAST foe UCONN who completed the three-game series sweep with a 12-1 victory Monday at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, CT. The loss drops GU to 9-42 overall and 2-21 in conference play. The Huskies, with the win, improved to 24-17 on the year and 12-7 in the BIG EAST.
Starting pitcher Kevin Field (1-7), despite a tough second inning in which the Hoyas committed two errors, lasted six innings allowing nine runs (five earned) on six hits. The sophomore also struck out three increasing his team-leading total to 50 for the year. Freshman Travis Danysh (1IP, 1H, 2R) and junior Patrick Salvitti (1IP, 2H, 1R) finished out the last two innings on the mound for the Hoyas.
Freshman Travis McCourt (3-for-4) led the Hoyas offensively but GU didn?t get timely hitting as they scattered eight hits while leaving eight runners on base. In three separate innings (2, 3, 5) Georgetown was able to get a leadoff hit but were unable to drive them in as the Huskies were nabbed the next three batters in each situation. The one run by the Hoyas came in the fourth when they were down 9-0. Third baseman Bill Quinn reached on a single through the left side and advanced to third on right fielder Robert O?Hare?s double to right field. Centerfielder Carlos Gazitua brought Quinn home on a sacrifice fly, GU?s only run of the game. UCONN added three more runs over their final two at bats completing the game and series sweep with the 12-1 victory.
The Hoyas return home for their next game against the University of Maryland on Tuesday, April 30, 2002. The game, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, MD, is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
