PISCATAWAY, NJ ? Astrong pitching performance by freshman Eddie Pena, who tossed seven innings allowing three runs on six hits, wasn?t enough against Rutgers who received eight shutout innings by their starter Tom Wheeler who gave up just one hit while striking out nine. Georgetown, which fell for the 10th consecutive time, is now 7-30 overall and 2-11 in conference play. Rutgers improved to 15-11, 5-5 in the Big East.
Following a two-out run in the first, Hoyas starter Pena kept the game within reach lasting seven innings striking out three and walking just one. Georgetown?s best opportunity to close the gap and possible take the lead came in the top of the fifth. Patience at the plate put runners on first and second with none out by virtue of back-to-back walks by Michael Lombardi and Matt Carullo. Wheeler, the Scarlet Knights starter, then took control of the inning striking out the next three batters. The Hoyas were unable to rebound as Wheeler dominated the game. Rutgers scored once in the fifth and again in the seventh to finish out the game with the 3-0 victory.
