Bethesda, MD - Georgetown dropped their final home game of the season to the Howard Bison last night 15-13 in 11 innings. Despite scoring 15 runs and collecting 20 hits Georgetown could not manage to pull it out. Georgetown now falls to 9-44 on the season while Howard improved to 8-35.
Starting pitcher Paul Perillo (0-0), lasted 4.1 innings allowing 11 runs (9 earned) on seven hits. The senior also struck out 5 in his last home game of his college career. Senior Tony Pina suffered the loss pitching 5.2 inning allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits. Despite the loss the senior Pina walked 0 batters and dished out 11 strike outs while facing 23 batters. Senior Eric Sutton entered into the game in the top of the 11th with runners on first and second with no outs, but could not hold off the Bison giving up a two out bases loaded single which were the game winning runs.
The Hoyas opened up the first inning with a run on a sacrifice fly from Ron Cano scoring Mike Green to grab the 1-0 lead. Howard scored two runs off 0 hits in the top of the second inning off 3 Georgetown errors. Georgetown came back to score 3 runs off 4 hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead heading into the third inning. Howard countered with 4 more runs in the top of the third inning off 3 hits and 2 errors made by the Hoyas. Georgetown scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the third inning to now take a 7-6 lead thanks to a two run homer from Robert O'Hare who now leads his team with seven home runs on the season. The Bison struck right back in the top of the fourth inning with two more runs to take the lead right back to 8-7. Georgetown would then go four inning without scoring a run, while the Bison scored 4 runs in the fifth and 1 in the sixth inning to take a commanding 13-7 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Hoyas fought right back with a run in the bottom of the eighth but suffered leaving 3 runners on base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning with the the Bison leading 13-9 Ron Cano delivered a bases loaded triple in which he scored on at the end of the play due to an error by the cut off man, and now Georgetown had tied the ball game up 13-13 heading into extra innings. The Hoyas could only manage to get one hit in the bottom of the tenth and then Howard grabbed the lead for good when the Bison's right fielder Mutskabbir smacked a bases loaded single with two outs to right center to go up for good 15-13. Georgetown would now fall to 9-44 on the season while the Bison improved to 8-35.
Georgetown will be back in action this weekend when they head to Pittsburgh, PA. to face the Pittsburgh Panthers in their final games of the season. The Hoyas will battle in a double header on Saturday, May 4, 2002 starting at 12:00 noon. The Hoyas will end their season on Sunday , May 5 2002 playing just one game, also starting at 12:00 noon.
