Ricky Fried Joins Georgetown Women' Lacrosse Coaching Staff

August 27, 2002 Washington, DC ? Georgetown University women?s lacrosse head coach Kim Simons announced that Ricky Fried has been hired as a full-time assistant coach.  Fried replaces former Georgetown assistant coach Kellie Young who left GU to become the head coach at James Madison University.

Coach Simons comments, "I am thrilled to have Ricky join our coaching staff.  His wealth of knowledge and experience, along with his enthusiasm for the game, will make him a great fit for the Georgetown Women?s Lacrosse program. I am looking forward to working with Ricky in the years to come."

Fried recently completed his ninth season as the top assistant at Johns Hopkins University.  The first full-time assistant at Hopkins, Fried served as the recruiting coordinator for the program.  He came to Hopkins in 1994 to help with the transition from Division III to Division I.  The move was a successful one as Fried helped JHU?s head coach Janine Tucker build Johns Hopkins into a Division I Top 20 program.  Fried was the Blue Jays? offensive coordinator during his first eight years before moving to defense for the 2002 season.  As offensive coordinator, Fried was instrumental in the development of several All-American attackers, including Danielle Maschuci, Hopkins? first Division I All-American.

A 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), Fried was an All-American midfielder for the Retrievers.  He served as team captain and was named Most Valuable Player his senior year.  Fried was named to UMBC?s All-Time Team in 1990.  He arrived at Hopkins following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at The Gilman School under John Tucker.  Fried also played professionally with the Philadelphia Wings from 1989 through 1992 and the Baltimore Thunder from 1993 through 1994 and 1997.

Fried joins a program that has become a national powerhouse since the arrival of Simons seven years ago.  The 2002 Hoyas posted a 17-2 overall record and made their fifth-consecutive trip in the NCAA Tournament and a second-straight appearance in the Championship Game.  The squad also earned the program?s first ever No. 1 ranking in the Intercollegiate Women?s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, and went undefeated (6-0) in the BIG EAST to earn a second-straight Conference Championship.
