WASHINGTON, DC. ? The #4 ranked Georgetown University women?s lacrosse team came up with big plays on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field to earn a 13-3 victory over #7 Syracuse in women?s BIG EAST lacrosse action on Saturday, March 15, on North Kehoe Field. Senior attacker Wick Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) led the Hoyas in scoring with four goals, while sophomore Sarah Robinson (Great Falls, Va./St. Mark?s School) was outstanding in goal for the Hoyas. Robinson notched 17 saves on the day, several in spectacular fashion. Leigh-Ann Zimmer led Syracuse with two goals.
Syracuse got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted tally by Zimmer just two minutes into the game, but Stanwick responded with a goal off a free position shot at 26:19 to tie the score at 1-1. Monica Joines made it 2-1 in favor of Syracuse with an unassisted goal at 24:03; however, it would be the last SU score until late in the second half. The Hoyas reeled off six unanswered goals to take a 7-2 lead into the half. Junior midfielder Gloria Lozano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley) began the run at the 19:32 mark, followed by back-to-back goals by junior midfielder Anouk Peters (Ipswich, Mass./Millbrook School). Senior midfielder Liz Ryan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was credited with the assists on Peters? second goal. Sophomore midfielder Allison Chambers (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) and senior attacker Tracy Weickel (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) each contributed a goal each during the scoring spree. Lozano closed out the half with goal scored from a free position shot with just seven seconds left in the first period.
Highlights of the second half included three goals from Stanwick. She opened the second stanza by picking up a ground ball and firing it into the net to put Georgetown up 8-2. Also scoring goals in the period for the Hoyas were junior midfielder Michi Ellers (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) and sophomore midfielder Lauren Bernier (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga). Zimmer posted Syracuse?s last goal of the day at 8:08.
Robinson picked up her fourth win of the season in the cage. Freshman Dosha Stright (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) relieved Robinson at the 5:20 mark, but was not called on to make a save as the Hoyas? defensive unit stepped up to hold the Orangewomen in check.
The Hoyas outshot the Orangewomen 24-19 and held a 10-7 advantage in draw controls. Georgetown also scooped up 36 ground balls, compared to Syracuse?s 20. GU also made 17 caused turnovers to the SU?s eight.
Georgetown will take to the road for its next game. GU will meet the #20 Richmond Spiders on Wednesday, March 19, at 3:30 p.m. The Hoyas return to home to host #5 Duke on Saturday, March 22, at noon.
