WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? The Georgetown baseball team fell to William and Mary on the road by a score of 11-4 in the Hoyas? season opener Saturday at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, Va.
William and Mary scored four times in the third and seventh innings and capitalized on four Georgetown errors, and the Tribe?s pitchers Forrest Cory and Jeff Dagenhart combined to allow just four Georgetown runs in the opening contest for both ball clubs. Cory picked up the win after giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits in five innings. Dagenhart earned the save.
Georgetown starter Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/ Ross), the first of four Hoyas pitchers, was charged with the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
The Tribe offense rattled the Hoyas? pitching for 15 hits on the day. Georgetown posted 10 hits, but couldn?t manage to cross the plate until the top of the fourth, and after posting another two runs in the sixth, were then held scoreless in the game?s final three innings.
William and Mary's Chris Rahl gave the Tribe the early lead with two outs in the first inning, as he wrapped a home run around the leftfield foul pole to give William and Mary the early 1-0 lead.
William and Mary added to its lead in the third as Jon Rhymes and Chris Rahl led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and catcher Mike DeCarlo knocked both in with an opposite field home run.
After another Tribe run, the Hoyas cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but William and Mary answered with one more in the fifth.
The Hoyas trimmed the lead to two in the sixth inning, as sophomore Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./ Edmond North) laced a one-out single to left field, and then scored on a home run by sophomore Danny Gronski (Sammamish, Wash./ Skyline). Gronski ended the day 2 for 4 with two runs batted in, while Dargen was 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Right fielder Billy Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./ Alta Loma) and catcher Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven Hamlet, NY/ St. Anthony?s) also had multiple hit days, each going 2 for 4 with a run scored.
The second and final game of the series is set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Plumeri Park. William and Mary will start senior lefthander Chris Shaver, while sophomore Stephen Burns (West Chester, Pa./ Malvern Prep) is slated to get the ball for the Hoyas.
