Hoya Baseball Wins Home Opener

2/25/2004

Box Score

BETHESDA, Md. ? The Georgetown baseball team excelled both at the plate and on the mound in their home opener Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich field in Bethesda, Md.

The trio of Georgetown pitchers Eduardo Pena (Miami, Fla./ Michael Krop), Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/ Ross) and Stephen Burns (West Chester, Pa./ Malvern Prep) were extremely effective and combined to hold the visiting Mountaineers to no earned runs and only one run overall as the Hoyas (2-5) defeated Mount St. Mary's (0-1) by a score of 6-1.

Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./ Morristown) blasted a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning for the game?s first score. The towering drive to centerfield was Jones's first of the season. He followed that in his next at bat with a shot to the leftfield gap, which was nearly run down by Mountaineer leftfielder Jim Jefferson, but the ball eluded him and rolled to the wall as Jones sped around the bases for a triple. Jones ended the day 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

Mount St. Mary?s scored their only run of the game in the top of the third, when Sizemore replaced Pena after two scoreless innings of work (4 K, 2 BB, 1 H, 2 IP) , and a single by Mount St. Mary?s centerfielder John Digirolamo and a subsequent throwing error on a possible double play ball extended the inning and advanced the runners for Jason Weszka?s RBI single.

Hoya second baseman Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./ Bishop Gorman) raised his season average to .310 with a 3-for-3 game at the plate. Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./ Newport) was 2-for-4 on the day, and Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter?s Prep) and Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) also had hits for Georgetown.

With the exception of the miscue in the fourth inning, the Hoyas were perfect in the field. Mount St. Mary?s struggled, however, and Georgetown took advantage of sloppy Mountaineer defense in the fourth inning by putting four runs on the board. Between several throwing errors, misfielded grounders and passed balls, the Mountaineers ended the day with eight errors.

Georgetown will next return to action this weekend, with a pair of double headers against Buffalo. Game time for game one is set for noon on Saturday at Shirley Povich Field.
