BETHESDA, Md. ? The Georgetown Hoyas baseball team improved to 4-5 this season defeating the Buffalo Bulls (0-2) on both ends of doubleheader Saturday at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. The victories extended GU?s win streak to three while also keeping the Hoyas undefeated at home.
Sophomore right-hander Stephen Burns (1-2) pitched a complete game five-hitter leading the Hoyas to an 8-1 victory in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Burns struck out four and walked one earning the decision. Bulls starter Nick Bellacose (0-1) picked up the loss allowing three runs on three hits in four innings. GU?s offense posted a season-high eight runs on five hits, four that went for extra bases. Andrew Cleary, Timmy Jones and Danny Gronski hit homeruns for the Hoyas. Bulls first baseman James Kingsley also homered in the seventh breaking up Burns? shutout. Second baseman Parker Brooks added a double for Georgetown.
Righty Eduardo Pena (1-0) earned the Game 2 victory hurling 5.2 innings for Georgetown allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven. Freshman reliever Erick Chandler limited Buffalo to one hit and added five strikeouts over the final 3.1 innings sealing the 7-3 win. It is the second time that Pena and Chandler combined for a game high 12 strikeouts. The other was in a 10-inning loss at Davidson on February 21, 2004. Chris McGraw suffered the loss for Buffalo allowing 6 runs (5 ER) in 4.1 innings. GU was patient on offense drawing a season-high nine walks or hit-by-pitches. Brooks went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI leading the Hoyas offense. Drew Dargen, Ron Cano, Cleary and Jones each added a hit for Georgetown.
The Hoyas and Bulls play again tomorrow, February 28th, for another doubleheader. Game 1 is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. EST at Shirley Povich Field, Bethesda, MD.
