Georgetown Splits Day Two of Rollins College Baseball Week

3/12/2004

Game 1 Box Score - Game 2 Box Score

WINTER PARK, Fla. ? Georgetown split a day-night doubleheader Thursday at the Rollins College Baseball Week, defeating Pennsylvania by a score of 9-6 at 3:30 p.m., but falling to Rollins 2-1 in the nightcap. Georgetown?s season record now stands at 11-7.

In game one, Georgetown batted around in the fifth inning and sent six men across the plate as the Hoyas posted a 9-6 victory over Penn. Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven Hamlet, N.Y./ St. Anthony's) had the big day at the plate for Georgetown, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Ryan Craft was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and two runs scored.

Penn (2-5) received two hits a piece from Jon Slaughter and Matt Horn, and each scored a run.

Michael Halloran (Canton, N.Y./ Williams) picked up the win on the mound, throwing three innings and surrendering two earned runs on four hits. Bill Kirk suffered the loss for the Quakers, allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Penn struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning off of an Even Sobel double to take a 2-0 lead.  Ron Cano (El Segundo, Calif./ El Segundo) put the Hoyas on the board in the third with a solo home run to left to make the score 2-1.  The Quakers tacked another one on in the fourth when Brian Winings led off with a double and was brought home with a Matt Horn single.

The Hoyas then exploded for six runs on five hits with two outs in the fifth to take a commanding 7-4 lead.  Lombardi knocked in two runs in the inning with Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./ Edmond North), Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill), and Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./ Benjamin) each batting in a run.

Penn fought back with one run in each the seventh and eighth innings, but solo home runs by Lombardi and Craft in the ninth sealed 9-6 Hoya victory.

In game two, a pitchers duel for eight innings was decided at the plate in the ninth as the Rollins Tars (18-3) rallied to defeat Georgetown 2-1.

Juan Dieguez and Luis Dieguez each singled to lead off the Rollins ninth with the Tars down 1-0.  The duo moved up a base after an error before Luis Dieguez was replaced by Chris Munoz to put men on second and third with no outs.  Mike Crane grounded out to second base on the Tars next at bat and plated Dieguez to knot the score at one.  Gene Howard then poked a huge double down the left field line that scored Munoz to give the Tars the 2-1 lead and the eventual victory.

Steve Edsall retired all but one batter to pick up the win for Rollins.  The senior hurler fanned 14 batters while surrendering one run on seven hits.  Stephen Burns (West Chester, Pa./ Malvern Prep) suffered the loss for the Hoyas, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine in eight and two thirds innings of work.

Garrett Preisser was 2-for-3 to lead the Rollins bats with Crane and Howard each recording an RBI.  Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./ Morristown) and Lombardi each knocked out two hits to lead Georgetown with Cleary tallying the team?s lone RBI.

The contest was a stalemate through three, with each team sitting down in order before Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter's Prep) slapped a single in the third for the game?s first hit. GU then got on the board in the fourth with lead off singles from Jones and Lombardi, followed by a sac fly from Cleary to make the score 1-0.  Both pitchers then cruised through the next few innings until the Tars were able to score two in the ninth.

Rollins will be back in action on Friday, March 12, in day three of baseball week when they will take on Penn at 3:30 p.m. followed by a match-up with Long Island at 7:00 p.m.  Georgetown will take on Long Island at 12:00 p.m. in the day?s opening game.
