WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown freshman Trey Martin (Pacific Palisades, Calif./ Loyola) today was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week?the second consecutive week a Hoya pitcher has received the honor.
Martin threw a complete game, three-hit shutout against UMBC on Wednesday in his first career start, and came back to pitch a scoreless inning in Georgetown?s extra-inning win over Yale on Sunday.
Against UMBC, Martin faced just three batters over the minimum to pick up the nine-inning complete game shutout. He allowed only three hits and two base-on-balls while striking out three against the Retrievers. On Sunday against Yale, Martin surrendered just one hit and one walk in Georgetown?s 8-7 victory.
Overall for the week, Martin allowed just three walks and four hits in 10 innings of scoreless work. Martin?s contributions in the two Georgetown victories have helped propel the program to its best winning percentage (.600, 9 wins ? 6 losses) since 1984.
With a 2.91 combined ERA, the Georgetown staff currently leads the BIG EAST in team pitching. Hoya hurlers have won BIG EAST Pitcher of the Weeks honors every week this season, after sophomore Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/ Ross) earned the award last week in its debut. Sizemore and Martin are the only two BIG EAST pitchers to have thrown shutouts so far this season, and Sizemore currently holds the conference lead in strikeouts (21). Martin, Sizemore and fellow Hoya Stephen Burns (West Chester, Pa./ Malvern Prep) comprise three of the conference's four pitchers that have thrown complete games this season.
