4/4/2004

Box Score

STORRS, Conn. ? After dropping both games of their opening doubleheader against the University of Connecticut on Saturday, the Georgetown baseball team rebounded with 5-0 victory in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.

Georgetown starter Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./ Rutgers Prep) and reliever Thomas Braun (Kingwood, Texas/ Kingwood) combined for a three-hit shutout as the Hoyas (18-16, 4-5 BIG EAST) defeated the Huskies (12-11, 2-4 BIG EAST).

The three hits were UConn?s fewest since their season opener on Feb. 27 at Arizona State. Chandler threw seven innings for the Hoyas, allowing two hits and two walks with a trio of strikeouts. Chandler improved his season record to 4-2 and dropped his ERA to 2.43. Braun threw two shutout innings in relief of Chandler and allowed just one hit, no walks, and struck out a pair of Huskies. Braun picked up his fifth save of the year, which currently ties him for the conference lead with Notre Dame?s Ryan Doherty.

UConn's counterpart on the mound, sophomore Brendan McGinn, also had a solid outing, as he allowed two runs in seven innings of work, yielding eight hits and two walks while fanning four.

Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) drew a leadoff walk. Ron Cano (El Segundo, Calif./ El Segundo) followed with a single, one of his four hits on the day, and then Cleary stole third. Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter?s Prep) drove in the game?s opening run with a single.

The Hoyas got a second run in the sixth inning when Cano doubled and scored on another Supple single.

The Hoya lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the eighth when Cano scored, unearned, on an error. The final two runs for Georgetown were scored in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded two-RBI double by Cano that brought Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./ Bishop Gorman) and Billy Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./ Alta Loma) home.

Supple had hits in all four games this week for the Hoyas, going 6-for-16 (.375) over the span. Cano was 5-for-12 (.417) on the week.

The Hoyas next play Coppin State on the road April 7 at 3:00 p.m.
