ITHACA, N.Y. ? Syracuse?s Sean Lindsay scored his second goal of the game with five seconds left to play in the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 tie, as Syracuse came from behind to defeat Georgetown 8-7 Sunday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Orange advances to the NCAA final four for the 22nd consecutive year and will play top-ranked Johns Hopkins next Saturday while Georgetown falls in the quarterfinals for the third straight season.
Attackman Sean Denihan (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) tallied three first-half goals to help the Hoyas to a 5-3 lead after 30 minutes. Syracuse's all-time career scoring leader
Michael Powell cut the Orange deficit to one goal at 3:18 of the third quarter before Georgetown's Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored his team-leading 24th tally of the year with a low, hard shot that skipped past goaltender Jay Pfeifer at 4:53. Powell found the back of the net with goals at 6:40 and again at 9:36 to even the game at six apiece after three periods.
Denihan scored his fourth goal of the game at 3:51 into the final quarter to give Georgetown its last lead, 7-6. Kevin Dougherty's unassisted goal tied the game at 7-7 with 8:19 left in the last quarter. Both teams were playing tenacious defense. Georgetown was patient in setting up its offense and was doing a solid job of blocking the Syracuse shooting lanes. With less than two minutes to play, goaltender Rich D'Andrea (Belle Mead, N.J./The Peddie School) made a huge save on a shot by the Orange's Kevin Nee, but as the Hoyas brought the ball upfield, they were called for an offside with 40 seconds to play. Syracuse called a time-out after the possession change, before the Orange's Steve Vellone found Lindsay in front of the Georgetown cage for the game winner.
D'Andrea made a career high 18 saves, including 13 in the first half, for the Hoyas, which completed its season at 11-4. Pfeifer stopped 19 shots for the Orange, which improved to 13-2.
