Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team (3-10) lost to the University of Pennsylvania Quakers, 3-0 tonight on Franklin Field. Junior goalkeeper Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md.) posted five saves and allowed two goals before Head Coach Laurie Carroll replaced her (53:24) with freshman goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md.), who recorded two saves and allowed one goal.
The Hoyas were forced into heavy defensive play as the Quakers (7-6) outshot GU, 19-3. Penn also produced more opportunities with 18 penalty corners to Georgetown's two.
The first half saw tough defense from the Hoyas. Although Penn took nine shots, Georgetown held them off and the Quakers could not find the back of the cage. The score would be tied at zero going into the second half.
It was not until 43:08 that Penn's Lea Salese connected to score the first goal, unassisted for the Quakers. With the 1-0 lead under their belt, the offense from Penn was even more aggressive and less than eight minutes later Nicole Black scored the second goal, upping the Penn lead to two. After the goalkeeper switch, and with less than three minutes left in regulation, Penn's Kristen Gray scored the third and final goal for the Quakers off a double-assist penalty corner from Meghan Rose (setter) and Cara Calahan (corner).
The Hoyas return to action this Sunday, Oct. 23 to host Maine at noon in the first of the quartet of home games to end the season.
