Field Hockey Defeated by Saint Joseph's, 2-1

Oct. 2, 2005

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team (3-7) was defeated by Saint Joseph's 2-1 today on Kehoe Field. The Hoyas drop their fifth game of the season by a one goal deficit.

The Hoya defense performed well and held the Hawks to just two goals scored despite the opportunities SJU had including 12 shots and 12 corners today.

The Hawks were aggressive from the start and put pressure on the Hoya defense. Early in the game, at 5:14, Maureen Casserly passed to an open Lauren Luft, who found the goal to put St. Joseph's up 1-0 early in the half. Despite the quick start by the Hawks, the Hoyas took advantage of their openings and sophomore Lauren Gallagher (Garden City, N.Y.) scored the equalizing goal off a pass from fellow junior, Deirdre McShea (Strafford, Pa.). The Hawks stayed aggressive for the remainder of the half, taking eight shots, but the Hoyas were able to hold them to one goal, as goalkeeper Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md.) recorded five saves.

The second half saw a similar tempo to the first as the Georgetown backline was busy holding off the Hawks. At 55:54, SJU's Shelley Meier broke through and passed the ball to Katelyn O'Brien, who scored the game-winning goal for the Saint Joseph's (7-3).

The Hoyas return to action Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Davidson to play the Wildcats. Davidson (1-6) will play Catawba and Stanford this week prior to their matchup against Georgetown.
