Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Seton Hall

April 16, 2005

Box Score

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University baseball team (19-18, 4-8 BE) split a double header with Seton Hall (9-22, 3-7 BE) on Saturday, April 16 at Owen T. Carroll field. Georgetown dropped the first game to Seton Hall 4-3, yet defeated the Pirates 6-3 in the second game. Georgetown pitcher Tom Braun set the Georgetown career saves record with 12.

Seton Hall pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take game one after trailing 3-0. Four consecutive Pirates reached base with one out to start the rally. Junior Patrick Sullian got it started with a single and senior Tim Pahuta was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a single by freshman Mark Pappas loaded the bases, sophomore John Walsh delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Pappas moved to third on the single and came home to score on a wild pitch to the next batter, tying the game 3-3. Sophomore Mike Young drove in the winning run with a single to left center. That run would remain the final 4-3.

In the second game, Georgetown built its lead with an unearned run in the first after Timmy Jones reached on a bunt single, stole second and then scored on a throwing error by Dam Merlinger. The Hoyas added a run in the fourth on a home run by Billy Quinn and then scored again in the sixth when Ryan Craft singled in Jones for a 3-0 lead.

SHU tied the game in the second after Young singled and moved to second on a single by sophomore Nate Halm. GU appeared it would get out of the inning on a ground ball by Lopez, but the shortstop's throw went into the dugout and allowed Young to come across the plate making it a 1-1 game.

The Hoyas added more runs in the fourth when Mark McLaughlin hit a one-out triple and scored on a bunt by Ryan Craft. A passed ball moved Craft to second and he scored on a single by Jim Supple to make it 3-1. The Pirates answered in the bottom of the inning when junior Brandon Cohen homered to right field to cut it to 3-2.

GU added another unearned run in the fifth to make it 4-2, but the Pirates came right back with a solo home run by sophomore Casey Hines to make it 4-3, but that was as close as SHU would get. Jim Supple tripled in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Johnson to make it 5-3. Supple reached on a bunt in the ninth and scored on a passed ball to make it 6-3. Tom Braun picked up the save in the ninth, after allowing the first two batters to reach base he forced a double-play and another ground out to end the game.

Pena threw 8.0 innings for GU, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Supple paced the offense with three hits and two runs to go with an RBI.

Seton Hall and Georgetown return to action on Sunday with a single game at noon.
