Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team (20-19; 4-9 BE) defeated Coppin State (18-25) 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich field in Bethesda, Md. The win gives the Hoyas a 2-0 sweep of the Eagles in 2005. Ryan Craft led the Hoyas, going four for four with two homeruns, including the game winner walkoff in the bottom of the ninth.
Both Georgetown and Coppin State started the scoring early. The Eagles Brian Vickers blasted a homerun in the top of the first to grab the 1-0 lead, yet the Hoyas' Ryan Craft answered back in the first, knocking the first of his homeruns, bringing in Timmy Jones to make the score 2-1.
The Eagles made a scoring run in the fourth, bringing in four runs to make the score 5-2. Vickers added his second run of the day, off a double by Paul Conway. Carlos D'Costa scored one play later on a passed ball, and three plays later Conway stole home, eluding the Hoya defense in a pickoff rundown. Corey Greene added the last run of the fourth.
The Hoyas gained some momentum back in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the bottom of the fourth, where Drew Dargen doubled to right center to bring in Billy Quinn and Craft who had singled and walked, respectively. The two runs brought the score to 5-4, with the Eagles leading. Georgetown then tied it up in the fifth, where Craft again brought in a run, where he singled to left to bring in Matthew Bouchard. In the sixth inning, Matthew Maranges homered to left field, bringing in Matt Johnson who had singled one play earlier to make the score, 7-5.
The Eagles added two more runs in the seventh to tie it up 7-7, where Amiel Traynum and Vickers both tallied runs.
Jones regained momentum for Georgetown in the bottom of the seventh, where he homered to right field, regaining the lead and making the score 8-7. Coppin State tied it up again in the top of the eighth, where Chris Ramsey scored on single by Traynum.
Craft blasted his second homerun of the day; nailing the game winning walk off homerun on the first pitch in the ninth inning, making the score 9-8.
Tom Braun earned the win for Georgetown, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out two. Coppin State's Alex Hangland was credited with the loss.
The Hoyas will next travel to BIG EAST opponent Boston College on Saturday, April 23. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. for the start of the doubleheader.
