Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team lost to George Mason 15-10 on Tuesday night at Shirley Povich field. The Hoyas fall to 21-22 while the Patriots improve to 24-13. Parker Brooks led the Hoyas, going three for five with a double.
Mason started the scoring off early, scoring their first run in the second when Adam Innerst led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. The Patriots added another run in the third where Matt Cooksey scored on a Robby Jacobsen single to shortshop.
Georgetown took over the scoring for the next two innings, where Mark McLaughlin scored Brooks in the third inning. The Hoyas added three more runs in the fourth to make the score 4-2. Billy Quinn scored the first run of the inning off a Jim Supple single to left field. Brooks doubled two plays later to score Supple and Drew Dargen who had singled to center earlier in the inning.
The Patriots grabbed the lead in the fifth, scoring six runs to make the score 8-4. Chris Looze doubled to left to bring in Matt York and Mike Genovese. Innerst then blasted a grand slam, driving in four RBI. The Hoyas answered back with two in the fifth, where Supple drove in two, scoring Dargen and Ryan Craft to make the score 8-6.
Mason added two more in the sixth, where Cooksey and Looze blasted back to back homeruns to extend the Patriots lead to 10-6. Georgetown added a single run in the bottom half of the sixth, with Brooks scoring on a wild pitch. The Hoyas almost cut the lead to two in the bottom of the seventh, but a pickoff on a two-out bases loaded walk ended the inning.
The Patriots drove in three more in the eighth, with Jacobsen scoring Cooksey on a single to left. Matt Barrett singled to center field two plays later to score Jacobsen. Two batters later, Tyler Youngs drove Barrett in on a single to left to extend the Patriots lead to 13-7. In the ninth, Mason scored two more runs by York and Cooksey for the 15-7 lead.
The Hoyas tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs, but that wasn't enough for the victory. Joe Graziano, Mark McLaughlin, and Brooks all added runs in the ninth.
Josh Morrison earned the win for the Patriots, pitching 6.2 innings and striking out nine. The Hoyas Tyler Abbott was credited with the loss.
The Hoyas will host Navy at 7:00 pm at Shirley Povich field on April 27.
