Baseball Splits Double-Header With Villanova

Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team split a doubleheader against Villanova on Sunday, April 3 at a cold and windy Shirley Povich field. The Wildcats defeated Georgetown 9-4 in the first game, while the Hoyas claimed victory in a 4-0 shutout in the second. Mark McLaughlin tallied four hits and one run for the day while Parker Brooks added three runs and three hits.

In the first game of the double header, Villanova got off to a quick start, scoring runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings while holding Georgetown scoreless. Nova scored two runs in the top of the first where Ryan Arcadia and James Dolbier each tallied an unearned run, making the score 2-0. `Nova struck again in the second, where Dolbier brought Andy Wendle across the plate on a sacrifice fly. Kris Molloy later scored in the inning on a passed ball to bring the total to 4-0. In the third inning, Mark Cardillo singled to drive in Jeremy Hunt, making the score 5-0. The Wildcats were held scoreless in the fourth, but again struck in the fifth to bring three runs across the plate. Wendle doubled to bring in Cardillo and Derek Shunk, and Wendle was then brought home two plays later off a single by Arcadia.

Georgetown went on a scoring run in the sixth, where they brought in four runs to make the score 8-4. Parker Brooks started the inning off with a double to left, and Mark McLaughlin followed, doubling to center and bringing in Brooks. Ryan Craft then singled to right, to bring in McLaughlin. Andrew Cleary added the third double of the inning, bringing in Billy Quinn who had singled. Timmy Jones brought in the final run of the inning, scoring Craft.

The Wildcats added one more run in the seventh where Shunk scored off a sacrifice bunt from Molloy. The score would remain the final, 9-4.

Nick Allen earned the win for Villanova while Stephen Burns was credited with the loss.

In the second game, Georgetown shut out Villanova 4-0. The Hoyas tallied runs in the first, third, fifth, and eighth innings for the win.

In the first, Billy Quinn singled to right center to drive in Parker Brooks to go up 1-0. The Hoyas added a run in the third where Craft tallied his first of two RBI sacrifice flies of the day, bringing in Danny Gronski who had singled to start off the inning. Craft added his second RBI of the day when he scored Brooks in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 3-0. In the eighth, Craft singled to left center to start the inning and was replaced by Derek deGrijs to run the bases. DeGrijs was then brought across the plate by Matt Johnson in a two-out situation to make the final 4-0.

Michael Gaggioli earned the win for the Hoyas, allowing only three hits in eighth innings, while striking out five. Tom Braun tallied his fourth save of the season, striking out two in three batters faced. Villanova's Mike Loree was credited with the loss.

The Hoyas will face Villanova in the final game of the series on Monday, April 4 at 11:00 AM.
