WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown men's soccer held the 20th annual Goals Unlimited Soccer Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 6, at the Faculty club. The banquet honored the five departing seniors, Ellery Bledsoe (Marietta, Ga./The Westminster School), Paul Brandley (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck), Kaiser Chowdhry (Columbia, Md./McDonogh), Dan Gargan (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) and Trevor Goodrich (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and announced season awards. In addition, Head Coach Keith Tabatznik also announced the 2005 captains: senior Brent Plumley (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional (UPenn)), and current junior Jeff Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Germantown Academy). The awards banquet held a moment of silence for the remembrance of Craig Tartasky, a long time Georgetown soccer supporter.
Gargan was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2004 season for the second consecutive year and was recently selected by the Colorado Rapids in the fourth round of the Major League Soccer Supplemental draft on Friday, February 4. Gargan was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team at the end of the 2004 season along with earning Third Team NSCAA All-South Atlantic Regional honors for the second consecutive season. Gargan was second on the team in scoring with 15 points off four goals and seven assists and ranks 17th on Georgetown's all-time points list with 40 points.
Sophomore Ricky Schramm (East Chester, N.Y./Fordham Prep School) was named Offensive Player of the Year. Schramm capped off a fantastic sophomore season by being named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year along with All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Schramm was also named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Regional Third Team. In addition to his post season honors, Schramm ended the year as the BIG EAST leader in points and goals with 13 goals and six assists in 20 games played.
Curtin was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Curtin was named to the Second Team NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Team. Curtin was also named All-BIG EAST Second Team for the third consecutive season. He played in 19 games this season and had five goals and one assist from the center back slot. Curtin has anchored the Hoya defense his entire career and earned the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award in 2002.
Freshman Richard Diaz (Los Angeles, Calif./St. John Bosco) was named Rookie of the Year. A solid force on defense, Diaz was one of only two Hoyas to start every game in 2004. Diaz tallied his only point of the year in a game winning assist against Navy.
Junior Danny McAnally (Mendham, N.J./Delbarton) was named Most Improved for 2004. McAnally, who started all but three games, was third on the team in points with 14, and was second in assists with eight. In addition, McAnally tallied three game winning assists.
Brandley was given the Ricardo Mendoza award, which represents the player who best exhibits qualities of spirit, leadership, and dedication. Brandley was named to the Academic All District II team for the second consecutive season. Brandley played in 17 games while starting three at back and forward, with the Hoya defense limiting opponents to 1.45 goals per game.
