Hoya Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Rutgers

May 15, 2005

Box Score

Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team (25-26; 7-14) split a doubleheader with Rutgers (28-19; 10-10) on Sunday, May 15 at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas fell 8-7 in the first game in extra innings, yet defeated the Scarlet Knights 2-1 in the second. The win for Georgetown was the first victory over Rutgers since 1997.

In the first game, the Scarlet Knights took the lead early, with Todd Frazier, Jeff Grose, and Colin Gaynor all tallying runs in the top of the first. Rutgers added two more runs in the second, to extend their lead to 5-0. The Hoyas answered back in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs of their own where Jim Supple drove in Timmy Jones and Andrew Cleary off a double to right center to make the score 5-2.

Rutgers added two more runs in the sixth, with Frazier and Tim Querns crossing the plate to make the lead 7-2.

It looked as though the score would remain 7-2, but the Hoyas went on a five run rally in the bottom of the seventh to tie up the ballgame. Matthew Bouchard started off the inning by reaching base on a hit-by-pitch, and Drew Dargen followed on a catchers interference. With two outs, Mark McLaughlin walked to load the bases. Billy Quinn then drove in Bouchard on single to center to cut the lead to 7-3. Cleary then singled to center to bring in Dargen. With bases loaded, after hitting a rocket that cleared the left line fence but was called foul, Ryan Craft was then walked, to drive in McLaughlin. With two outs, Supple then singled to left to drive in Quinn and DeGris, who pinch ran for Cleary to tie up the ballgame. Unfortunately, the Hoyas rally would end when Craft was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Johnny Defendis scored the game winning run in the top of the eighth for Rutgers, and the Hoyas were unable to score in the ninth, as the Hoyas would fall 8-7.

Sean Spicer (3-1) earned the win for Rutgers, while the Hoyas Mark Dutmers (0-2) was credited with the loss.

The second game was a battle of the defenses, as both teams struggled offensively. Rutgers started the scoring off first, where Gaynor homered in the top of the fourth for the Scarlet Knights only run of the game. The Hoyas Timmy Jones came to the rescue in the bottom of the eighth, blasting a two run homerun, his fourth homerun of the season, to drive in Parker Brooks. The homerun gave the Hoyas a 2-1 lead, which would remain the final.

Freshman Mike Gaggioli (4-5) earned the win for the Hoyas, pitching an impressive 8.1 innings while only allowing one run and striking out six. Senior Tom Braun (six saves) was credited with the save, striking out one in 2/3 inning pitched. Rutgers' Steve Holt (3-3) was given the loss.

The Hoyas and the Scarlet Knights will face off on Monday, May 16 at 12 noon for the final game of the series at Shirley Povich field.
