WASHINGTON, DC - Two Georgetown men's lacrosse standouts, Brodie Merrill (Orangeville, Ontario/The Salisbury School) and Andy Corno (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman), were selected in the first round of the 2005 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft held last evening in Fairfield, Connecticut at Sacred Heart University. The Baltimore Bayhawks selected Merrill with the third overall pick while Corno was chosen sixth by the New Jersey Pride. Both players were also selected to play in the annual GEICO/STX North-South All-Star Game for the South Team, which will be held on June 11 at SUNY Cortland in Cortland, New York.
Merrill will join former Hoya Mike Hammer (C `03) on the Bayhawks. Merrill was a dominating presence for the Hoyas in 2005 at long stick midfield. He recorded one of the most complete seasons in the history of lacrosse on the Hilltop and is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, the winner to be announced tonight in Washington, for the second consecutive season. Merrill is second on the all-time groundball list at Georgetown with 280 and his total of 104 this season was just one short of the all-time single season mark.
Teammate Corno is the player standing between Merrill and the Georgetown records for groundballs, as Corno owns the all-time groundball mark with 341 and set the single season mark with 105 in 2004. Corno owns all of Georgetown's face-off records as well winning 624-of-965 face-off attempts (64.7%) in 57 career games. Corno will be teaming up with four former Georgetown stars on the Pride as Neal Goldman (C `04), Walid Hajj (C `04), Scott Schroeder (B `02) and current Hoya assistant coach Scott Urick (C `00) all currently play for New Jersey.
