Hoyas Drop First Game of the Season, 4-0 to No. 5 Santa Clara

Washington, DC - The Georgetown University men's soccer team's perfect season was halted by No. 5 Santa Clara this afternoon during the second day of play at the Maryland/adidas Classic. The Broncos (3-1) used two goals within 43 seconds of each other in the 29th minute to open up a lead they would not relinquish, holding on for a 4-0 shutout. The Hoyas now stand at 3-1, having split their two games at the Classic this weekend.

Santa Clara's Erik Ustruck began the scoring with a shot from the top of the box that snuck past Hoya keeper Andrew Keszler at 28:12 for the 1-0 lead, assisted by Hector Guzman The Broncos kept up the pressure, as they widened the lead only 43 seconds later on a header by Keith Devey on a feed from Mehdi Ballouchy. Santa Clara closed out the first half with another goal on a 35-yard blast by Devey, his second goal of the half, with only five seconds remaining.

The game's final goal came in the 52nd minute as Matt Hatzke, scored from the right side of the box on a pass from Guzman, for his second assist of the day.

The Hoyas were led by two shots on goal by senior Chris Tansey in the loss.

At the conclusion of the tournament, three Hoyas were added to the all-tournament team. Junior Tim Convey and seniors Jeff Curtin and Ben Jefferson-Dow were selected for their play on the weekend.

The Hoyas return to the field on Friday, September 16, when they begin BIG EAST Conference action at one of the newest members, DePaul, beginning at 3 p.m.
