Bjonerud Named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week

Sept. 5, 2005

Washington, DC - Georgetown University sophomore kicker Eric Bjonerud (Potomac, MD) was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week, it was announced today by the league's office. Bjonerud's 33-yard field goal in overtime gave the Hoyas a 19-16 season opening victory, snapping a nine-game league losing streak.

Despite missing his first two attempts, Bjonerud came back to tie the game at 16 with a 26-yard field goal with 5:46 remaining in regulation. The Hoya defense would come up with multiple big plays, setting up his opportunity for the game-winner. After forcing the fourth fumble of the game in the first overtime, Georgetown had the ball at the 25, following NCAA overtime rules, with a chance to win the game. The offense moved the ball down to the 16-yard line, setting up Bjonerud's heroics.

Bjonerud added an extra point after the Hoyas second touchdown, as he totaled seven points for the game. He also acted as the team's punter on the night, kicking four times for 123 yards.

Last season, Bjonerud saw limited time on the field, going 1-for-2 in field goal attempts and 6-for-7 in PATs.

Georgetown looks to improve to 2-0 in the Patriot League on Saturday, when they travel to Worcester, MA to take on Holy Cross (1-0), who beat Sacred Heart 56-21 in their opener last week. The Hoyas and the Crusaders are set to kick-off at 1 p.m.
