WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown field hockey (1-2) defeats Longwood University (2-2) 3-2 in overtime to win its first game of the season on Kehoe Field today.
The first half saw a precise offense from Longwood as they only had four shots but delivered on one in the 15th minute of play. LU's Alexis Ramey scored an unassisted goal to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Georgetown took 11 shots in the first half but could not connect.
Eleven minutes into the second half Georgetown senior Erica Chan (Reisterstown, MD) shot the tying goal off an assist from freshman Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, MD). With the game tied up sophomore Lauren Sheets (Lutherville, MD) scored off an assist from junior Megan Cellucci (Malvern, PA) from a corner to put the Hoyas up 2-1 with 10 minutes to go in the game. With less than five minutes remaining in regulation time, Longwood's Sarah Hitchings shot the equalizer goal with the help of Marina Sizow. Hitching's goal sent the game into 2-2 sudden victory overtime.
Just eight minutes into overtime Farrand found fellow freshman Katie Lachman (Bryn Mawr, PA) who shot the game winning goal past Longwood goalie Avanell Schmitz. Georgetown freshman goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, MD) had four saves alone in overtime and six on the day.
The Hoyas return to the Hilltop this Saturday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m. to face Lehigh University.
