Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) scored a game-high 25 points and senior
Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) netted a career-high 24 points as the Georgetown University women's basketball team tallied a 79-67 BIG EAST victory over visiting Providence College. The duo combined for 17 of 19 from the free throw line. The Hoyas, who run their record to 7-0 when they lead at halftime, improve to 8-6, 1-2 in the league. The Friars had a five-game winning streak snapped and fall to 6-8, 1-2 in the BIG EAST.
Georgetown sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) scored 11 points and handed out a game-high six assists as the Hoyas have now won four straight over PC. Junior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) scored nine points on three second half three-pointers.
After holding the lead for a total of 15 seconds in the previous two games, the Hoyas trailed the Friars for just 17 seconds tonight. GU also matched a season-high, making 48 percent of their field goals (27-56). Georgetown shot 60 percent from the floor after halftime, their best second half shooting performance of the season.
The Hoyas jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) bucket just three minutes in but Providence would stay within eight points over the next 10 minutes and even took the lead 21-20 with 7:04 to go before halftime. GU had a mini 12-7 run before the break and took a 32-27 lead into the locker room. Marlow and LeSueur combined for 10 of the points in the stretch.
Georgetown took their largest lead 53-39 at the 12:18 mark of the second half on Heidloff's first trey of the game but PC battled to cut it to 62-54 on two Kristina Baugh free throws with 6:59 to go.
The teams played even the rest of the way as LeSueur and Heidloff combined for 10 points in the final five minutes.
Providence received 19 points from Shauna Snyder while Gayle Nwafili posted her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards.
Georgetown will be in action again on Saturday, January 14, when GU travels to West Virginia for a 4:30pm BIG EAST Conference contest.
