Davidson, N.C. -- The Georgetown University baseball dropped a 5-2 decision at Davidson College in the final game of a three-game weekend series on Monday. Georgetown, which fell to 1-3 on the season, could muster two hits, one by junior catcher Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) and one by junior leftfielder Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture).
Freshman lefty Andy Ferich (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) struck out two and faced one batter over the minimum in three innings of relief.
The Wildcats hit a pair of two-run homers while four DC relievers did not allow a Hoya hit.
Sophomore Brant West (1-0) pitched five innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run for the win. Senior Jay Heafner picked up his second save by striking out the side in the ninth.
Heafner, who started the game at shortstop, got things started in the first for Davidson, drilling a two-run homer to right-center to plate senior Ronnie Shore, who led off the frame with a base hit.
Georgetown got on the board in the third with an unearned run. deGrijs stroked a lead off single and moved to third when a pick-off attempt went into the Davidson bullpen down the right-field line. With one out, Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) lofted a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the GU deficit to, 2-1.
Davidson came right back by scoring three runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Senior Alex Entrekin doubled, went to third on a grounder to short, then trotted home on a two-out single off the bat of junior Blake Osborn. Freshman Pat Brady then hit a two-run homer down the right-field line.
The Hoyas pushed across their second run in the sixth inning. Leadoff batter Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) was hit by a pitch before stealing second. After a one-out wild pitch and a walk, senior Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.
Over the final three innings, Georgetown could not push advance a runner past further than second base.
Georgetown returns to the diamond on Sat. Feb. 25 when the Hoyas hosts St. Joseph's in a non-league twinbill that begins at 1 p.m. The games will be played at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
