Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team won its first game in program history at the 2006 Capital Classic held in Dover, Del. The Hoyas defeated Coppin State, 7-2, before losing to Mount St. Mary's, 7-2, in the final game of the weekend tournament.
Freshman shortstop Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./TownsendHarris) went 1-for-3 against Coppin State with a two RBI single. Sophomore Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) went 1-for-2 at bat with a double and a sacrifice bunt to score one run while fellow sophomore Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) score an additional two runs for the Hoyas. Junior catcher Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) recorded two hits with a single and a double to notch one RBI. Freshman Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) went 1-for-2 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) went the distance to record the win. Clark gave up five hits, two runs, three walks and struck out three batters. As a team, Georgetown made one error against the Eagles.
"Overall, it was a total team effort," said Assistant Coach Kim Staehle. "We played well both offensively and defensively and we were ecstatic about the win."
Against Mount St. Mary's, the Hoyas recorded four base hits. Sophomore Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) got on base with a single while fellow sophomore Erin Doherty (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) went 1-for-1 at the plate and scored a run for GU. Senior Stephanie Sartori (Indiatlantic, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) went 1-for-3 at bat to record one RBI and junior Lacey Campbell (Louisville, Ky./The Louisville Collegiate School) got on base once with a base hit.
Sophomore pitcher Anna Wheatley (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles) pitched three innings and gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks. Clark relieved Wheatley for the final three innings giving up three hits, two walks and struck out two batters.
The Hoyas return to the field on Wednesday, March 15 when they host a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb at the Mount Vernon Athletic Center. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
