Washington, D.C. - Georgetown scored five runs in the second inning, sophomore second baseman Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) drove in a season-high four runs and senior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) had three hits and scored three runs, leading the Hoyas to a 10-6 non-league win over George Washington at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia.
The Hoyas won their second-straight game and are now 19-24 overall, while the Colonials fall to 15-25.
Georgetown jumped out to a quick lead with five runs in the top of the second inning. Colonials starter Jim Duggan loaded the bases with none out after singles from junior Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) and sophomore Matthew Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) and when sophomore Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./CBA) reached an error as he attempted a sacrifice bunt. Duggan walked senior Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) and he was relieved by Justin Prinstein, who gave up a single to McLaughlin and issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to senior Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North) and Bouchard before being relieved by Tim Sexton with Georgetown lead 3-0.
Sexton was able to get out of the inning, but not before a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) brought in the Hoyas fifth run.
The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth when Bouchard drove in a run with a single and Davis brought in another with a sacrifice. McLaughlin was issued a leadoff walk and moved to second when senior Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) reached on an error. A double steal moved the runners up and Bouchard delivered a single to bring in McLaughlin. With runners on the corners, Davis' sacrifice scored Craft.
The Colonials scored four runs in the fourth inning - two charged to junior starter Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) and two to sophomore Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley) - to narrow the gap to 7-4, but the Hoyas responded with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to seal the win.
In the sixth, the Hoyas put the first two runners on after a double to center from McLaughlin and a walk to Craft. A sacrifice put runners on second and third with one out before Bouchard sent a triple to right, scoring both runners and giving Georgetown a 9-4 lead.
In the seventh, Harrigan hit a one-out infield single, moved to second on a single from Jones and scored when McLaughlin double to left.
McConnell threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts as he improved to 1-4 this season. Dutmers threw 4.1 innings, yielding two unearned runs on two hits, with five walks and five strikeouts.
Bouchard went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI, while McLaughlin was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Jones led off and went 2-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI, Davis drove in a pair of runs, Maranges added a pair of hits and a run; Harrigan scored twice and had one hit and DeGrijs added a run and a hit.
Georgetown hits the road this weekend, traveling south for a key BIG EAST weekend series at South Florida. First pitch on Friday, April 28 is slated for 6:30 p.m.
