Washington, D.C. - Nine Georgetown University returning baseball players concluded their respective summer league obligations in the summer of 2006.
Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep), who sat out the 2006 GU spring season after transferring from the University of Virginia, played with the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and helped the squad to the 2006 Championship. The 6-4 righty struck out 15 batters in 16.1 innings of work. Chandler compiled a 1.65 earned run average while opposing hitters batted only .145.
Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) finished his Georgetown sophomore season with a team-best 55 hits. The right-handed hitting infielder ranked third on the Newport Gulls team with a .294 batting average and earned a starting spot in the NECBL All-Star Game. The infielder led the league with 29 runs scored and ranked second on the Gulls with 45 hits, 12 doubles and six RBI while helping Newport set a new league record with 32 victories.
Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) played with the Mankato (Minn.) Moondogs of the 12-team Northwoods League, collecting 24 hits in 45 games. The catcher, who is in his senior year with the Hoyas, tied for the team lead with four homers.
Right-handed pitcher Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross), who played with Outer Banks Daredevils (N.C.) of Coastal Plains League, fanned seven hitters while walking one in 12.1 innings.
Catcher Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) and outfielder Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) played in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League, which is comprised of eight teams that are located primarily in the central New Jersey area. Pustizzi, who batted .286 during his freshman season for the Hoyas, batted .250 in 24 games for the Protocall Starz. Pustizzi also drove in six runs on 16 hits. Begin played with the Middletown Monarchs and batted .260 in 100 at-bats, appearing in 35 games with the Monarchs.
Matthew Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) participated with the Orlando Shockers of Florida Collegiate Summer League. Maranges started in 41 of the 47 games he appeared in for Georgetown in 2006. The infielder collected five hits in 15 starts in Florida.
Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) played with the Rockville Express in the six-team Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League. For the Hoyas in 2006, Kennedy ranked second in the BIG EAST and set a new school single-season record with nine saves in his sophomore season. For the Express, Kennedy tossed 18 innings in 14 relief appearances and allowed just one earned run while yielding a .172 opponent's batting average. Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) who has transferred to Georgetown after spending his freshman season at Duke played with the Bethesda Big Train. Saris tied for the team-lead with a 4-1 record and ranked fourth on the team with 34.2 innings pitched. Saris struck out 24 batters in seven appearances, including six starts.
Lefthander Andy Ferich (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) struck out 23 batters in 22.0 innings pitched for the Quakertown Blazers in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League
During the 2006 season, the Hoyas won 10 BIG EAST games, the most league wins since 1986 and posted a 24-32 overall record.
