Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team lost for the third time in its last four games after a 3-1 defeat to the visiting Connecticut Huskies. Georgetown falls to 2-6-0 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST action.
After a first half of limited opportunities for both sides, the offensive pace picked up after intermission.
The Huskies (5-2-2, 4-0-1) had the first strong scoring chance early in the stanza when junior forward Chukwudi Chijindu chipped a wide-open possibility over the crossbar from only two yards from the goal line.
Two minutes later at the 52:07 mark, Connecticut struck for the game's first goal. Sophomore Akeem Priestley moved the ball forward from the right side of the field and sent a cross into the middle of the penalty area where sophomore O'Brian White took a shot that was placed neatly into the lower left corner of the goal.
Four and a half minutes later, the Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 off a corner kick. Priestly sent the corner towards the far post where it was headed by White back into the middle of the penalty where Chijindu was able to head the ball over the outstretched hands of Georgetown goalkeeper Joe Devine (Exton, Pa./The Haverford School).
Georgetown refused to go away quietly. In the 65th minute, freshman Scott Larrabee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Loyola HS of LA) drew a UConn foul in the penalty box. Senior Ricky Schramm (Eastchester, N.Y./Fordham Prep) took the PK and hit a ball with enough pace to beat Huskie goaltender Matt Sangeloty who had guessed correctly. It was Schramm's fifth goal of the season.
The Hoyas continued to force the issue for the next eight minutes before Connecticut tallied again.
With 13:27 left in regulation, Euan Holden stole an errant Hoyas pass near midfield. After carrying the ball into the Georgetown defensive end, Holden found Chijindu who was about 30 yards from goal. Chijindu one-touched a ball back to Holden who was able to get just enough of the return pass on a shot as Joe Devine came way off his line. Devine got a piece of the shot but Holden had enough power behind his shot for his first collegiate goal.
Sangeloty made two saves for UC. Each team took 12 shots, and each team had five corner kicks.
"We played to win today and I felt like we took it to UConn," said first-year GU head coach Brian Wiese. " We lost today's game because of their counter attacks. UConn is so athletic and quick. For a 3-6 team, our guys never feel like we're out of it. We didn't pay attention to details today and they made us pay."
Georgetown will be right back in action on Wednesday, September 27 when the Hoyas host another BIG EAST foe, Seton Hall in a 3 p.m. matchup.
