Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - After a first half in which Georgetown scored the only touchdown, the Hoyas and host Marist battled back and forth in a high-scoring second half that ended with a 21-21 tie at the end of regulation. The teams traded scores through the first two overtime periods, but Marist's Bo Ehikioya scored on a six-yard run, lifting the Red Foxes to an exciting 37-34 win over Georgetown at Tenney Stadium. The loss drops Georgetown's record to 1-9 overall, while Marist improves to 2-8.
The Hoyas had taken a 34-31 lead after senior kicker Eric Bjonerud (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) booted a 42-yard field goal in the third overtime period, but Ehikioya, who had 28 carries for 177 yards, scored his third touchdown of the game, giving the Red Foxes the win.
Trailing 21-14 in the fourth quarter, the Hoyas wasted no time, moving five plays and 56 yards over a span of 1:56, tying the game at 21-all when sophomore slot back Charlie Houghton (Toronto, Ontario/St. Michael's) ran it in from 26 yards out. The Hoyas forced the Red Foxes to punt on the next possession and big gains from senior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./Port Edwards) and Houghton moved GU into field goal territory. A 38-yard field goal attempt from Bjonerud, however, went just wide with 40 seconds left in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Marist took a 21-14 lead early in the fourth quarter when McGrath threw a 30-yard pass to Tim Keegan. It was the second-straight score for the Red Foxes, who had tied the game at 14-all after a one-yard run from Ehikioya at the end of the third quarter.
Georgetown led 7-0 at the half, but the Red Foxes struck quickly on their first drive of the second frame, with quarterback Steve McGrath throwing a 47-yard scoring pass to Tim Keegan, taking advantage after a Hoya defensive back slipped. The Hoyas went three-and-out on the next possession, but sophomore Joey Tavarez (San Jaun Capo, Calif./Mater Dei) intercepted a pass from Marist's Steve McGrath at the 25-yard line as GU took control again. A 10-yard run from Houghton tied the game at 14-all.
After stopping the Red Foxes on the game's opening drive, the Hoyas took advantage of a 16-yard punt into the wind by Marist's Bradley Rowe and went to work from the 47-yard line. Senior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./Port Edwards) threw a seven-yard completion to Sidney Baker (Atlanta, Ga./Booker T. Washington) on first down and ran for four yards to gain a first down. After another run from Bassuener, this one for 14 yards, Houghton moved the Hoyas to within the 10-yard with a gain of 14. The 2006 Patriot League Rookie of the Year capped the seven-play, 47-yard drive with a seven-yard run up the middle with 10:21 to play in the quarter, giving the Hoyas an early 7-0 lead.
The Hoyas dominated play in the first half, gaining 255 yards in total offense and holding Marist to 144 yards, 79 of which were gained on the game's opening drive. That drive was stopped at the Hoya five-yard line when Bo Ehikioya was tackled by junior Anthony DiTomasso (Short Hills, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and. The Hoyas took over at their own five-yard line and held the ball for seven-plus minutes, moving to the Marist 29-yard line, but could not convert the fourth down play.
The teams traded possessions through the middle portion of the second quarter and Georgetown took control on its 12-yard line after a punt. Bassuener completed passes of 10 and seven yards, respectively, to Houghton and then threw the longest pass of his career - a 58-yard pass to sophomore Robert Lane (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) - as GU moved to the 11-yard line. A penalty call for a block to the back and one for a hold, however, moved the Hoyas back to the 35-yard line as time was running out in the half. Bassuener completed a 17-yard pass to Houghton and a 44-yard field goal attempt from Bjonerud went wide right and Georgetown led 7-0 at the break.
Houghton's three rushing touchdowns mark the first time a Hoya player had three since John Sims scored three against Davidson during the 2003 season. He finished the day with 27 carries for a career-high 163 yards and caught eight passes for 76 yards. Bassuener completed 19-of-28 passes for 219 yards. Georgetown closes out the 2007 season next Saturday, hosting Colgate at the Multi-Sport Field. Kickoff on the Hilltop is slated for 12:30 p.m.
