Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped game two of their 2007 opening series at Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Hoyas led 12-2 in the third inning but could not hold onto the lead, falling to Davidson 20-15.
Junior first baseman Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) finished 4-5 with two runs scored and one run batted in as he connected on his second homerun of the season. Sophomore rightfielder Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) went 1-3 with two runs scored and four runs batted in and also hit his second homerun of the season.
Freshman righthander Cary Piligian (Troy, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) took the loss in his first collegiate appearance, giving up four earned runs in less than an inning of work. Starter Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) allowed three earned runs in his three innings of work and senior righthander Mike Hoy (Southlake, Texas/Southlake) struck out four in three innings of relief.
Senior righthander Matt Knight earned the win for Davidson after giving up only one unearned run in three innings of relief. Starter Rob Shenk was rocked by the Hoyas for eight runs, all earned, in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
The Hoyas got on the board after junior catcher Matt Iannetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) delivered a RBI single to right-center that scored senior leftfielder Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture).
After Davidson went ahead 2-1, Georgetown's offense exploded in the top half of the second when the Hoyas plated 10 runs and built an 11-2 lead. Harrigan homered to right field to lead off the inning and tied the game at two apiece. With the bases loaded, senior centerfielder Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) walked on four pitches and plated senior third baseman Joe Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) to give GU a 3-2 lead.
After that, deGrijs grounded into a fielder's choice and brought home Baumann. Iannetta then walked on four pitches to bring yet another runner home. After a pitching change, senior designated hitter Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) drilled a two-run single off reliever Brian Packey. Finally, Baumann delivered the big blast, as he hammered a grand slam to centerfield that gave the Hoyas a nine run lead heading to the bottom of the second.
After Iannetta grounded into a run-scoring double play in the top of the third, Georgetown led 12-2 and seemed to be in control of the game. However, Davidson chipped away at the Hoya pitchers scoring four in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth to cut the lead to 13-12. Finally, Davidson took the lead for good with a five-run sixth and added three more in the seventh to account for all 20 of their runs.
Georgetown scored two runs after they took a 12-2 lead against the Wildcats. In the fifth, Iannetta was drilled by a pitch which plated freshman second baseman Joe Silvestri (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and gave GU a 13-8 lead. The Hoyas got their final run in the seventh on a RBI single by Bouchard that also scored Silvestri, and cut the Davidson lead to 17-14.
The Hoyas will play game three of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Wilson Field with Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) to start on the hill.
