Box Score
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team had a program-high 10 hits en route to a 20-0 victory over Coppin State today at the Bachman Softball Complex. This is the most runs scored in program history for the Hoyas (6-18) as well as the program's largest margin of victory.
The Hoyas started the onslaught in the first inning with freshman Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) on second and freshman Jadig Garcia (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) on first. A double to left field off the bat of senior Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) plated Cipriano and Garcia for the 2-0 GU edge. Freshman Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) knocked a RBI single to center field to bring Richter home for the last run of the inning.
With the bases loaded in the third inning, Bahadue reached first on a fielder's choice, gaining the RBI as freshman Samantha Peters (Suwannee, Ga./Collins Hill), while an errant throw by CSU's third baseman Francesca Guy allowed Richter to score the second run of the inning. A wild pitch by Coppin's Nicole Buchko put Bahadue on third while freshman Olivia Newhouse (Weston, Conn./Green Farms Academy) came home. A short groundball to first off the bat of junior Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) brought home Bahadue while freshman Sarah Kamenski (Mountain View, Calif./St. Francis) advanced to third. The second errant throw by CSU's Guy brought home Kamenski and put Cipriano on first. This was immediately followed by a Garcia walk, as Peters stood on deck for the second time in the inning. A RBI single plated Cipriano and put Garcia on third as Peters took second on the throw. A Richter walk was followed by a Newhouse two-run single to left field that scored Peters and Garcia for the last two runs of the inning.
With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Cipriano knocked a RBI single to left field and reached second on the throw while senior Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored and sophomore Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) came home on an error by CSU leftfielder Danyel Davis. With the bases loaded, Peters delivered a two-run double. Another walk from Golden Eagle pitcher Christen Glascoe loaded the bases with sophomore Katie Zoch (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) on deck. Zoch reached first on another errant play by third baseman Guy and earned the RBI when Campbell crossed the plate. Two more walks from Guy allowed Peters and junior Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) to trot home with the 19th and 20th runs, respectively.
Freshman Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) pitched five innings for the win allowing a mere two hits and striking out 10.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, March 17 in their home opener. GU welcomes Northern Illinois to Guy Mason Field for a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
