Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown softball team lost two games to James Madison today at Guy Mason Field in its home opener. In the first game, GU lost, 7-1 and dropped a five-inning 8-0 decision in the second game. Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the first game. Today's game marked the first time the Hoyas played at their new home, Guy Mason Field. The Hoyas played a 27-game schedule last year in the first season of softball on the Hilltop.
Trailing 7-0 in the first game with freshman Olivia Newhouse (Weston, Conn./Green Farms Academy) on third, freshman Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) knocked a RBI single to score Newhouse, the lone Hoya run of the day.
In the first game, the Blue and Gray (6-20) held James Madison to a scoreless three innings before a five-run fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth gave JMU a 7-0 edge.
Connell pitched seven innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits.
In the second game, James Madison (15-9) started the game with a home run to set the tone. The Dukes put up two runs in the first inning and tacked on another four in the second and two in the fifth inning.
Georgetown recorded four hits in the second game as freshman leadoff batter Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) went 1-for-3 with a single through the right side. Junior Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) went 1-for-2, tallying a single while sophomore pinch-hitter Katie Zoch (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) laced a single through the middle in her only at-bat. Junior Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) recorded the fourth hit in the game with an infield single.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, March 24 when they host the Hoya Invitational, a two-day, four-team tournament at Guy Mason Field. The Hoyas welcome Canisius, Radford and Colgate and will host Canisius in the first game of the tournament with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Hoyas will play a second game at 5 p.m. against Radford.
